The former Champions League winner SG Flensburg-Handewitt started the new season of the Handball Bundesliga with a resounding victory in a gripping northern duel at HSV Hamburg.
In Hamburg, coach Maik Machulla’s team won on Thursday evening (September 1st, 2022) with a goal from Johannes Golla three seconds before the end with 31:30 (17:13).
Hectic final phase
After some initial difficulties, the hosts from Hamburg came into play better and kept the action open even after being four goals behind at the break. The game became more and more hectic as the game went on: Hamburg’s captain Niklas Weller saw the red card after an elbow blow to Jim Gottfridsson (42nd minute). HSVH played the final seconds with a double deficit. Asat Waliullin’s last free throw landed in a block and the SG celebrated the narrow victory.
Bitter for Flensburg: Left winger Emil Jakobsen had to leave the field in the first half with a knee injury after an unfortunate collision with Hamburg’s Leif Tissier.
Gummersbacher opening victory in East Westphalia

Dominik Mappes (eight goals) was able to celebrate as VfL’s top pitcher. The hosts’ best scorer was Samuel Zehnder (six goals).
