After four games without a win in a row (three defeats, one draw), VfL Gummersbach has once again achieved success. Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson’s team prevailed at TVB Stuttgart on Monday evening with 31:29 (17:13).
The omens for the Gummersbachers were anything but rosy, as the team had major concerns in the backcourt. Both left-hander Tom Jansen (torn hamstring) and playmaker Dominik Mappes (personal reasons) were out at short notice and were unable to make the trip to Baden-Württemberg.
However, Sigurdsson’s team did impressively – even if they benefited more than once from hair-raising bad passes and unsuccessful shots on goal by their opponents. The score went into the break at 17:13 – without the good saves from Stuttgart goalkeeper Silvio Heinevetter, Gummersbacher’s lead would certainly have been even clearer.
Setback after the break
TVB coach Michael Schweikhardt obviously found the right words at halftime because his team came back with much more vigor. The guests, on the other hand, completely missed the beginning of the second half and lost almost their entire lead within just four minutes. But when the score was 17:18, Gummersbach consolidated itself again and responded accordingly by the 36th minute with 20:17. Now the opponent made more and more mistakes again, so that VfL ultimately saved the victory without any major problems over time.
Gummersbacher’s best thrower was newcomer Milos Vujovic with nine goals. Daniel Fernandez Jimenez scored seven goals for Stuttgart. With their first away win of the season, VfL was able to put some space between themselves and the relegation zone. The Swabians, on the other hand, remain in the bottom of the table with just one win.
