The Füchse Berlin defended their lead in the table on matchday 10 of the Handball Bundesliga. They defeated MT Melsungen in the top game.
Coach Jaron Siewert’s team won 37:31 (17:15) in a thrilling game in the Max Schmeling Hall on Thursday evening and remains the undefeated leader with 20 points. After the second defeat of the season, Melsungen is still in second place for the time being with a loss of four points. For the Berliners, the Dane Lasse Andersson was the best thrower with eleven goals, while national player Timo Kastening scored seven times for Melsungen.
Melsungen with the better start
The guests from Hesse got off to a better start. They were still ahead 12:11 in the 20th minute. But after Hans Lindberg equalized, Füchse goalkeeper Dejan Milosavljev saved a seven-meter penalty from Timo Kastening. Then the game ended. The Foxes took the lead for the first time through Lasse Andersson (13:12) and extended their lead to 17:15 by the half-time whistle. Bad luck for Melsungen: David Mandić had to leave the field injured and Erik Balenciaga hit the post with the half-time whistle.
Foxes just have to in the meantime tremble
The second round started very badly for Melsungen. Shortly after the restart, Dainis Krištopāns received a two-minute penalty for a foul and Berlin pulled away – at one point the Foxes had a five-goal lead. Melsungen’s coach Roberto Garcia Parrondo took a break and reorganized his team.
Melsungen fought and recovered. Three goals in a row without conceding brought the team closer again and then only one goal was missing to equalize, but it wasn’t enough. In the final minutes, the Berliners brought home the victory. When Kastening missed another seven-meter shot at 30:33, the game was decided.
