HC Erlangen, the surprise team in the Handball Bundesliga at the start of the season, is passed further down after the bankruptcy against Gummersbach.
Erlangen lost on Thursday evening (December 8th, 2022) at the start of the 16th matchday with 31:37 (15:19) against old champions VfL Gummersbach and conceded the sixth defeat in a row in the Handball Bundesliga. In the table, Erlangen slipped behind the promoted team from Oberberg.
Erlangen coach Alonso: “Sometimes not suitable for the Bundesliga”
Most recently, Erlangen could still annoy the top teams SG Flensburg-Handewitt, THW Kiel, Rhein-Neckar Löwen and Füchse Berlin. “But of course it also gnaws at you when you end up without any points again and again,” said captain Sebastian Firnhaber.
Against Gummersbach, the self-image of the first games was visibly lacking, as coach Raul Alonso had to admit: “This is a testimony to general, current uncertainty. At times it just wasn’t suitable for the Bundesliga. We have to think of good solutions as quickly as possible in order to achieve the turnaround.”
It doesn’t get any easier for Erlangen: In the next game, the Franconians are visiting champions SC Magdeburg (December 17).
Wins for HSV Hamburg and Lemgo Lippe
In the other games on Thursday evening, HSV Hamburg won against bottom light ASV Hamm-Westfalen 32:25 (16:12). TBV Lemgo Lippe prevailed against HSG Wetzlar with 34:29 (16:14).
