ThSV Eisenach won the thriller in the promotion race to the Bundesliga. The Thuringians won the long-distance duel against Dessau-Rosslauer HV on the final day of the match and are promoted.

The ThSV Eisenach is back in the upper house. Thanks to a 26:25 (11:14) at HSC 2000 Coburg, the team from Wartburgstadt is returning to the Handball Bundesliga after seven years. Due to the victory of the Thuringians, the 32:29 (17:14) of the Dessau-Roßlauer HV at the Eulen Ludwigshafen was only waste. After a strong season, the beavers remain in the second handball league.

Eisenach with mega comeback thanks to Grgic

ThSV coach Misha Kaufmann had to do without a few top performers: Peter Walz, Jannis Schneibel and keeper Johannes Jepsen were absent. Anything but ideal conditions before the important game in Coburg.

And also in the first half, the ThSV was followed by bad luck. The two keepers could hardly get their hands on the ball, top scorer Fynn Hangstein was almost completely signed off, Philipp Meyer was sent off in the 22nd minute, Daniel Hideg had to go down injured and HSC then went on to run 6-0 in the meantime on the plate. Little went together for Eisenach and so, despite the strong support of the numerous fans who had traveled with us, the break was deservedly 11:14.

And things didn’t look good for the Kaufmann squad after the break either. In the 34th minute, the Thuringians were six goals behind (11:17). But the ThSV showed morale. Kaufmann switched to offensive defense, suddenly the goalkeeper game worked, Hangstein scored (six goals in the end). It all came together. Eisenach managed the turnaround supported by youngster Marko Grgic (six goals). As requested by the coach in “Sport in the East”, the people of Wartburgstadt “put their hearts on the plate”. It was still tight, mainly thanks to Coburg’s keeper Jan Jochens, who kept driving ThSV insane. But in the end there was no holding back, the more than 700 guest fans who had traveled with them flooded the record. Eisenach is back in the Bundesliga.

Goal difference prevents DRHV promotion

Dessau-Roßlau would also have liked to have made it into the Bundesliga, but it wasn’t quite enough to cause a sensation. After the last day of the 2022/23 season, it is clear that the DRHV 06 will also start in the 2023/24 season in the second handball Bundesliga. The team of head coach Uwe Jungandreas did their homework on Wednesday (June 7th) with the 32:29 (17:14) victory at the Eulen Ludwigshafen, but sorely missed the necessary support from HSC Coburg. Even before the game, the coach of the year had said that staying in the league would not be a big drama. The 61-year-old confirmed to “Sport im Osten” in advance that the disappointment about missing out on promotion would be great, but “not huge”. And further: “We will certainly not break it.”

You could see over the 60 minutes at the Eulen Ludwigshafen that his team doesn’t break down under pressure. The DRHV fell behind early in the first half, but then the third-placed team, whose goal for the season was to stay up in the league, showed what he was made of. The usual rapid counterattacks by the DRHV put the owls under pressure again and again and ultimately ensured a 17:14 lead at the break.

After the change of sides, Dessau-Roßlau started off strong, but then the Jungandreas squad seemed to have a bit of a headache – probably also because Eisenach was behind in Coburg at the time. The nervousness went so far that Ludwigshafen even took the lead again with a goal in the 57th minute. The nearly 100 DRHV fans who traveled with them suspected bad things, but after a break, the DRHV pulled itself together again and ended the game with four goals in a row, but still as a second division team – thanks to the worse goal difference compared to Eisenach.
