Hamann causes a surprise at the German championship

Martin Hamann and Selina Freitag won the German ski jumping championship titles at their home game in Saxony.

Hamann prevailed on Saturday on the large hill in Klingenthal ahead of Stephan Leyhe and Philipp Raimund. The 26-year-old won the German championship for the first time and had already come close to the title in 2020. At that time he came second behind Markus Eisenbichler.

Three weeks before the start of the World Cup season, Hamann flew at 137 and 130.5 m in a competition accompanied by wind and rain. With 294.9 points, that was enough for victory ahead of Leyhe (293.1) and Raimund (289.3). .

“I’m super proud that I got it down like that,” said Hamann: “I was able to make very good use of the summer season and set new impulses. The jumps weren’t at their optimum yet, so I can even work on it a bit.”

Defending champion Andreas Wellinger impressed in the first round (140.5 m), but fell back to fourth place due to a weak second jump (129.0).

Aue also won the women’s event, Friday triumphing for the second time. The 22-year-old successfully defended her title and relegated three-time world champion Katharina Schmid to second place.

Schmid had triumphed under her maiden name Althaus last spring at the World Championships in Planica on the normal hill as well as in the team and mixed team.

The decisions in the team competition will take place on Sunday in the Vogtland Arena.
