After it became known on Friday that the dead woman who was found on Tuesday night in Halsteren died as a result of a crime, there is a lot of unrest among local residents. “It’s a bad thought that she was found so close to here. Especially because we don’t know what caused it,” says a resident.
“The fact that it is a murder really affects you,” said Corina from Steenberg. She often walks in the area with her husband, including this Saturday afternoon.

The 75-year-old victim was reported missing on Tuesday evening. The woman’s body was found in the woods near ‘t Wasven on Tuesday night. The police have not yet made any statements about the exact cause of death, but after an autopsy it was announced on Friday that the woman died as a result of a crime.
The police are still busy with the investigation and have requested camera images from local residents in recent days. A spokesperson said that the woman was a resident of Halsteren and did not stay at one of the (psychiatric) care institutions at the Vrederust Estate.
According to the local resident, mainly people over the age of seventy live in the immediate vicinity of the site. “They are anxious now. They lock their gates and doors and say they will no longer walk their dogs in the evening.”

In the morning there is normally a coming and going of elderly people who go running in the forest, the woman says. “You always hear all kinds of bird sounds here. On Tuesday afternoon I was talking to my daughter on the phone in the garden, when we both heard a very loud noise. It sounded like a few screams. After that, nothing more.”
She continues: “My daughter asked if I had bought a peacock because she heard the screams on the phone. We joked about it a bit.” A day later the police called to investigate the neighborhood. “Now my daughter and I are wondering if it was that woman we heard.”
