Halsema ‘burdened with threats’ after a message about the lack of honor

Mayor Femke Halsema has had a large number of threats because of the news that a possible celebration of Ajax will not take place in the city. She writes that tonight on Instagram.

The municipality announced this afternoon that it cannot hire enough security guards to allow the event to take place. “Since we published this message, I have been personally bombarded with threats and name-calling,” Halsema writes. “I rarely respond to that. Now I do want to ask urgently, stop it!”

She writes that she is not against holding a ceremony. “I am also in favor of celebrating sporting successes in a big way. It is not for nothing that we brought the celebration back to the city in 2019. I understand the disappointment and hope that Ajax will be back on Museumplein next year. But keep it civilized and friendly, don’t damage our city and especially our club.”

Ajax will play against sc Heerenveen on Wednesday evening. In most scenarios, the club then becomes champion. That may be celebrated by the municipality in the stadium. There may also be supporters outside the Johan Cruijff Arena to celebrate.
