Half of the electricity this year came from renewable sources

Half of the electricity in the Netherlands this year came from renewable sources. Most of it came from biomass and wind energy, but the share of solar energy is increasing, reports Energieopwek. People also used less electricity this year. The demand for electricity fell by 5 percent.

Energieopwek shows that offshore wind turbines are becoming increasingly important. The platform was established to monitor the growth of sustainable energy. On December 24, the wind turbines on land and sea were most productive.

The Netherlands ranks fifth in Europe when it comes to the total number of solar panels. “The Netherlands is even the leader per inhabitant,” says Energieopwek. “At the start of the Energy Agreement, no one thought that was possible.” Solar energy production peaked on June 13. At that time, enough was generated for 40 percent of the electricity demand in the Netherlands. The low point was on December 19.
