Gert-Jan Timmerman (28) from Kortrijk can call himself the fastest Belgian ever at the Marathon Des Sables: he covered 236 kilometers in a week in 22 hours and 30 minutes and finished eighth. “I didn’t really think for a single moment, ‘Damn what have I started’, it was really pure enjoyment.” His achievement raised 16,000 euros for Think Pink, a charity that has been very fond of him since his sister had breast cancer.
