Half a century of legal nudist beach in Callantsoog

It’s a party for the nudist: the first legal nudist beach in the country has been around for fifty years. The arrival of the beach was not without a struggle, but after all these years there is nothing left of it.

From the ‘ordinary’ beach it is a three kilometer walk until you reach the official nudist beach. Despite that great distance, there was a lot to do about it. Cultural scientist Kees Zwaan has researched the beach and explains: “There were fierce opponents, including Piet Vos. At the time, he threatened to spray the naked people full of black paint.”

Nevertheless, nude sunbathing became legal. At the time, Jan Koelemeij was a councilor of the then municipality of Callantsoog and was strongly in favour. “People were afraid it would attract a certain people, but that didn’t happen at all. Most Callantsogers were in favor.”

prudish

That is still clearly visible: there are more than enough naked people sunbathing. “Although we are becoming prudish. I understand that too. With all those mobile phones, a photo is taken in no time,” says a sun worshiper.
