Haley: ‘Far away’ from dropping out of US primaries

WASHINGTON/GREENVILLE (dpa-AFX) – Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley does not want to give up in the race for her party’s candidacy. She is “far away” from that, said the former governor of South Carolina during a speech in her home state on Tuesday. “Getting out would be the easy way out. I’ve never taken the easy way out. In every race I’ve ever won, I’ve been the underdog.”

The next Republican primary in South Carolina will take place on Saturday. So far, votes have been cast in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada – the former US president Donald Trump won by large margins in all of these states.

For “the political elite, the party bosses, the cheerleaders in the world of commentators,” the race was apparently already over in Iowa, Haley said, emphasizing: “Only three states voted, three.” She will “fight until the American people close the door. That day is not today, and it won’t be on Saturday, not by a long shot. The presidential primaries have only just begun.”

Many of the Republicans who openly supported Trump secretly feared him, Haley said. They know what a disaster he is for the party, but they don’t say it out loud. “I’m not afraid to tell the hard truth. I don’t feel the need to kiss the ring.”/gei/DP/he
