Hack shuts down a large part of the systems at West Frisian healthcare organization

The computer systems of the West Frisian healthcare organization Wilgaerden were hacked last weekend. As a result of the cyber attack, the hacked and a number of other systems of the company were taken offline. The organization, which has several residential care centers for the elderly and disabled, has therefore been unavailable or very difficult to reach for days.

In a press release informed the organization via their website that it was hit by a cyber attack last weekend. The hack came to light after the computer systems were disrupted over the weekend. Further investigation revealed that it was a hack.

Systems flat

According to spokesperson Frederique Hermie, Wilgaerden is doing everything possible to fix the hack as quickly as possible. She says that it is still unclear whether and what kind of data may have been stolen during the hack. “Our ICT employees are working together with external experts to remedy the hack.” In order to conduct this research as well as possible, the hacked and a number of other systems were immediately taken offline. “We have taken the precaution of this, with the result that we are currently less accessible.”

According to Hermie, the poor accessibility has no major consequences for the care activities. “All direct lines with clients run as usual. Only the indirect lines with suppliers, for example, go via a small detour and take a little longer.”

‘Looking at coffee grounds’

According to Hermie, how the hack came about and who may be behind it is currently ‘watching coffee grounds’. “We are awaiting the investigation before drawing any conclusions.” It is unclear how long the systems will remain offline. “Everyone is doing everything they can to get this done as quickly as possible.”
