Sakhir (dpa) – Formula 1 returnee Kevin Magnussen is looking forward to working with his new Haas teammate Mick Schumacher.
“He grew up with racing blood. I know what that means,” said the 29-year-old Dane during the tests in Bahrain. The 22-year-old Schumacher is the son of Formula 1 record world champion Michael Schumacher, Magnussen’s father Jan used to be active in the premier class of motorsport.
Kevin Magnussen was last active in a sports car series in the USA. He now replaces the Russian Nikita Masepin at Haas, who had to leave the US racing team as a result of sanctions because of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. Magnussen had already driven for Haas from 2017 to 2020 before the team opted for a new driver pairing.
Magnussen said he had a “really good” impression of Schumacher. “He has won in every category so far.” According to Magnussen, he was not explicitly asked to “play a mentoring role. It is important to understand that you can benefit from each other, but at the same time you are fighting for the same points.”
According to team boss Günther Steiner, Schumacher can learn a lot from Magnussen, who received a contract for several years. “That will help him in his development,” said the Haas boss.
