Haaland’s record goal is not enough: Liverpool draw at Man City

“Gunners” climb to the top

Even the next record goal from star striker Erling Haaland was not enough for Manchester City to win the top game of the Premier League against Liverpool FC. The English champions only managed a 1-1 (1-0) draw against coach Jürgen Klopp’s team on Saturday. Haaland put the hosts in the lead with his 50th goal in his 48th league game. No player in England’s top league reached this mark so quickly. Trent Alexander-Arnold scored ten minutes before the end to make it 1-1.

Update 8:35 p.m: In the evening, Arsenal FC managed to climb to the top of the table thanks to their opponents’ draw. Last season’s runner-up tried everything at Brentford FC for a long time, then Kai Havertz, who was repeatedly criticized, redeemed the “Gunners”. The former Bundesliga professional from Bayer Leverkusen scored the winning goal shortly before the end with a header. Havertz was only substituted on by coach Mikel Arteta in the 79th minute.

“This is the biggest challenge in world football,” Klopp said of the defending champions before the game. The Skyblues showed their class from the first second, Liverpool could hardly get out of their own half. The city pressing also led to a few passing errors: Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker, for example, fit exactly into Phil Foden’s feet. However, the winger was denied by the Brazilian keeper (11th). On the other side, Darwin Núñez tested goalkeeper Ederson with a header (16′).

Man City took advantage of another failed tee shot by Alisson: Nathan Aké passed to Haaland, who easily slotted in to make it 1-0 (27′). For the Norwegian it was his 50th goal in the Premier League in his 48th league game. The previous record man Andy Cole needed 65 games to score 50 goals. Liverpool became a little more offensive after the break. Núñez was denied by Ederson after 70 minutes, but ten minutes later the Brazilian was powerless: a precise shot from Alexander-Arnold landed in the net to make the final score 1-1, a happy one for Liverpool.
