Manchester City has reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The triple winner showed no weaknesses against FC Copenhagen – and set a record.
With a new record, Manchester City has reached the next round of the Champions League. Coach Pep Guardiola’s team celebrated their tenth consecutive victory in the premier class – a record for a Premier League team.
City had already gained a 3-1 cushion against FC Copenhagen in the first leg. The second meeting in the round of 16 ended up with the same result. The English ended the Danes’ European Cup dreams with another 3-1 (3-1).
An ex-BVB star got the home team on the road to victory early on. Manuel Akanji volleyed into the net after a corner (5th minute). World champion Julian Álvarez increased the score to 2-0 a short time later after a major mistake by FC keeper Grabara (9th).
Haaland scores again – and draws level with Kane and Mbappé
However, Copenhagen did not give up. The guests rewarded themselves for their effort after just under half an hour and shortened the score through Mohamed Elyounoussi (29′). Another former Dortmund player pulled the plug on the outsider. Erling Haaland scored shortly before the break to make the final score (45+3).
It was his eighth goal in the last five competitive games for his team. He is now in first place in the top scorers list in the current Champions League with six goals, but shares this with two other strikers: Kylian Mbappé from Paris Saint-Germain and Harry Kane from FC Bayern Munich.
After advancing in the Champions League, the “Cityzens” now have a particularly difficult task in the league next weekend. It’s off to Anfield Road for the top duel. There the reigning champions meet the leaders Liverpool FC. The “Reds” and coach Jürgen Klopp are currently one point ahead of Guardiola’s team in the table.
