Gymnastics World Championships in Liverpool: Daiki Hashimoto wins gold in the all-around

Japan’s Daiki Hashimoto won gold in the men’s all-around at the World Gymnastics Championships in Liverpool. Lukas Dauser was the only German there.

After the women’s all-around final, medals were also awarded to the men on Friday evening. The 24 athletes competed in six disciplines. The winner of the evening was Daiki Hashimodo from Japan (87,198 points). China’s Boheng Zhang stayed in the running for a long time, but was left behind in the end. After all, his 86,765 points were enough for silver. The bronze medal also went to Japan: Wataru Tanigawa also found a place on the podium (85,231 points). The German Lukas Dauser just missed out on a place in the top ten.

This is how the men’s all-around at the World Gymnastics Championships works

24 gymnasts qualified for the all-around final. In four rounds, they compete in different disciplines one after the other: floor, vault, parallel bars, rings, high bar and pommel horse. Six athletes start in one run per piece of apparatus. The entire group then rotates to the next device. At the end of the day, the gymnast with the most points wins.

Carlos Edriel Yulo from the Philippines made an impressive start. The 2019 all-around world champion scored 15,166 points, well ahead of his competition. World champion Daiki Hashimoto (14,666 points) and Brit Jake Jarman (14,433 points) followed at a considerable distance.

However, it was a Japanese man who did the best jump of the evening: Tanigawa achieved 15,000 points and thus 100 more than his compatriot Hashimoto and the Chinese Boheng Zhang (both 14,900 points).

Hashimoto really got going on the pommel horse

A Japanese was also able to convince on the pommel horse, but this time it was Hashimoto. He achieved 14,333 points. The Olympic champion of 2020 stayed just above the Chinese Boheng Zhang. (14,233 points). Illia Kovtun of Ukraine stayed a few points behind the top duo (13,933 points) in third place.

In his favorite discipline, Dauser quickly took the lead: 15,166 points kept him ahead on parallel bars for a long time. But the Filipino Yulo caught up with him. With also 15,166 points, but the better execution, he overtakes Dauser. Third was Zhang with 15,066 points.

The Chinese Boheng Zhang dominated on the rings. 14,100 went to the 22-year-old’s account, Hashimoto in second place only achieved 13,866 points. Just behind: Asher Hong. The American scored 13,833 points.

The race between the two Japanese Tanigawa (71,631 points) and Hashimoto (72,765 points) and the Chinese Boheng Zhang (72,322 points) remained tight to the end. The latter went to the high bar first and presented with 14,433 points – not enough to beat Daiki Hashimoto. The Japanese showed a flawless and safe freestyle, also scored 14,433 points and kept the upper hand with 87,198 points. His compatriot Tanigawa had nothing to counter that either. After all, his points were enough for the bronze medal.

Lukas Dauser takes 11th place

Lukas Dauser was the only German to start. With 81,598 points, the 29-year-old was eleventh. The German champion of 2021 scored 12,900 points on rings, 13,666 points on floor, 13,766 points on vault, 12,900 on horizontal bar, 13,200 points on horseback and 15,166 points on parallel bars. In this discipline, Dauser will compete in the final on Sunday and can calculate his chances of a medal. He won silver at the 2020 Olympics.
