Surprise at the World Gymnastics Championships in Liverpool. The 17-year-old Karina Schönmaier from Bremen starts tonight in the all-around final.

She is only 17 years old, at a World Championships for the first time and now she is starting in the final with the 24 best gymnasts in the world. For Karina Schönmaier, however, it was a big surprise that she moved up to the final and was allowed to show herself again on all four apparatuses in the almost sold-out arena.

Good performance in qualifying, but no place in the final for the time being

After qualifying, Schönmaier was in 31st place. The Bremen native could be satisfied with her first appearance on such a big international stage, but she did not make it into the top 24. The joy is now all the greater at the German Gymnastics Federation: “We are happy that Karina has the chance to compete with the best all-around athletes in the world tonight and that she and the whole team will be rewarded for the good performance in the qualification.” , said sports director Thomas Gutekunst.

So two German gymnasts with final participation

In addition to uneven bars finalist Elisabeth Seitz, the DTB also recorded another final participation in the women’s squad, which had to compete at these World Championships with a severely weakened replacement. Karina Schönmaier has already shown and wants to prove again tonight that young German gymnasts can also be internationally competitive.
