Gymnastics: Brendel wins second World Cup qualification

The German all-around champion Pascal Brendel has won the second artistic gymnasts qualification for the World Championships from September 30th to October 8th in Antwerp.

In front of 1,300 spectators in the SNP Dome in Heidelberg, the Wetzlar native prevailed with 83.05 points ahead of the Olympic silver medalist on parallel bars, Lukas Dauser. The Unterhachinger, who scored 82.55 points, missed the national title fights in Düsseldorf at the beginning of July due to a long injury break. On his special device he achieved the highest score of the day with 15.20 points. Lucas Kochan from Cottbus came third with 80.85 points.

Hanoverian Andreas Toba, who had won the first test two weeks earlier in Kienbaum, decided not to take part this time. The 2021 European Championship silver medalist on the horizontal bar dislocated his collarbone two months ago and followed medical advice to take it easy.

Like Nils Dunkel from Halle, who came second in the first qualification, who missed out on a possible podium place this time with a relegation on the parallel bars in the last round and came fourth with 80.00 points, Toba had already been nominated early for the World Championships in Belgium.

The team from the German Gymnastics Federation (DTB) is fighting for a ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The remaining three athletes that national coach Valeri Belenki wants to take with them to the title fights will be nominated in the evening and officially announced on Sunday. Brendel and Dauser have the best cards after their most recent appearance.
