Guus Meeuwis will stop his Groots with a Soft G concerts in Eindhoven after next year. He reports this on Thursday evening in the TV program Khalid & Sophie. “2024 will be the very last year,” says the singer at the talk show table.
Meeuwis made the decision himself, he says. “I never expected it to go on for so long. I am proud of that, but this is a decision with full conviction. ‘Grand’ is not over. It is still in full bloom and 2023 will be three fantastic concerts. But I feel I am ready for a new challenge.”
The singer explains that he also spent a lot of time on the concerts. “When I came on stage with Groots, I immediately saw things that made me think: that should be better next year. I’ve been working with Groots all year long. And not just me. It’s really a team effort. But I needed to share this news now, so I have time to kick the habit myself, when Groots is no longer there.”
Good luck
The concert series, which first took place seventeen years ago, has grown into a true phenomenon over the years. The concerts held in the Philips Stadium attract tens of thousands of people to Eindhoven every year.
But ‘Groots’ was also a success outside Brabant. In 2009 there were concerts in the Abe Lenstra Stadium in Heerenveen, in 2013 there was a Groots concert on Curaçao and in 2016 and 2017 Guus gave winter concerts in the Ziggo Dome.
Tens of thousands of fans
Guus saw his wish come true in 2006 with the first Groots concert. In front of the Omroep Brabant camera, he proudly told about the location: the Philips Stadium.
“I can’t imagine another stadium where I would want to do this. The stadium is of course made for playing football. That’s a good thing, because football is a lot of fun. But now there is a concert going on and that is a dream come true,” said the singer from Tilburg.
Two year absence
In 2022, the concert series returned after a two-year absence due to the pandemic. 2020, the planned anniversary edition was postponed to June 2021 due to the corona measures.
Because no events were allowed at the time, the concerts were canceled permanently. It was the first time that the concert series had to be cancelled.
Guus Meeuwis is a guest on Friday morning in the radio program Wakker! from Omroep Brabant. In the broadcast he will talk about Groots, but also about his new single.
