DRESDEN (dpa-AFX) – Saxony’s Energy Minister Wolfram Günther sees the financial support of the Intel chip factory in Magdeburg with several billion euros from the climate and transformation fund as an opportunity for the solar industry. It is an encouraging sign for the future of the industry, said the Green politician on Tuesday. What is possible for Intel must also be possible for the solar industry.
The federal government wants to support the Intel settlement with 9.9 billion euros – significantly more than originally planned. The project is becoming more expensive due to rising construction and energy costs. According to dpa information, Intel wants to invest more than 30 billion euros, including state aid. Originally, the company had given its investment sum as at least 17 billion euros. In a first expansion stage, two semiconductor plants are to be built.
Günther argued that building a hydrogen industry is also one of the goals of the climate and transformation fund. “The fact that Intel is now being supported with funds from this fund is laying the cards anew.” The EU must also gain energy sovereignty.
In recent years, a high-performance, innovative solar industry has grown in Saxony and central Germany. “We now need the right funding instruments quickly, a boost so that our solar industry can really scale and grow properly.” It would be a wasted opportunity not to do so./djj/DP/zb
