Gunther Emmerlich died at the age of 79

Gunther Emmerlich died unexpectedly. The Thuringian, who became known as an opera singer, presenter, author and entertainer, died at the age of 79. Nothing is currently known about the cause of death.

On Sunday, December 17th, Emmerlich performed at a Christmas concert in Lößnitz in Saxony. Even before that, he was often used as a singer and entertainer in various places. For example, a few days ago at the Friedrich Schiller School at a Christmas gig and also as a guest on the MDR talk show “Riverboat”.

The all-round talent, born on September 18, 1944 in Eisenberg, was a celebrity in the German television landscape, precisely because he made a name for himself as a talk show host who led through a program by singing. His formats included “Ein Kessel Buntes” and “Die Showkolade”. The studied opera singer also performed at the Semperoper for 20 years. But he also enjoyed appearing as an actor in a television series such as “In All Friendship”.

In 1990, Gunther Emmerlich was presented with a Bambi, and in 1997 he was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit, not least because he also served as an ambassador for the Carreras Leukemia Foundation. In 2019 he received the Golden Hen for his life’s work.

He leaves behind a daughter, Karoline Simang. He lived in Dresden until his death and was elected one of the “100 Dresdeners of the 20th Century” in 2000.
