If you have the wherewithal, you can try to get hold of an electric guitar that Kurt Cobain has not only signed but also demolished on stage. The 1973 Fender Mustang with sunburst finish will be auctioned by auction house Julien’s from November 11th to November 13th. It is part of the auction “Icons & Idols: Rock’n’Roll”which also features many other instruments and memorabilia by prominent musicians.

Kurt Cobain’s Fender guitar was smashed on stage on July 9, 1989 in Wilinsburg, Pennsylvania while he was playing the “Bleach” opener “Blew”. He later traded it with Sluggo Cawley, lead singer of grunge band Hullabaloo, for another smashed guitar he had hanging on the wall. In the trade, Cobain autographed them for Cawley: “Yo Sluggo, thanks for the trade. If its illegal to Rock And Roll, then throw my ASS in JAIL – Nirvana” is written on the instrument. The auction price is estimated at $200,000 to $400,000.

The auction will take place onsite at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York and online. According to Julien’s, over 1,500 items are on offer. These include John Lennon’s trademark glasses with round lenses, which are estimated to be worth between $60,000 and $80,000. A different kind of Apple Watch is cheaper: A watch Lennon owned with the Apple Records logo is estimated at $1,000 to $2,000.

Bob Dylan piano goes under the hammer

Bob Dylan is also in the auction: a Wm. Knabe & Co. grand piano, which he played at his home in the Byrdcliffe artists’ colony in Woodstock, is expected to fetch between $50,000 and $70,000. At Byrdcliffe, Dylan worked on the songs for his album Nashville Skyline (1969).

Other items in the auction include Amy Winehouse’s iconic hairpiece she wore to her 2008 Grammys performance, a Cadillac convertible owned by Neil Young, a Kurt Nelson electric guitar played by Prince and photographer Herb Ritt’s original Polaroid photos of Madonna taken. You can also bid on a number of the pop queen’s handwritten to-do lists.
