Guillermo del Toro: Not afraid of AI, but of “natural stupidity”

“I remain enthusiastic and skeptical at the same time,” said the director in a talk.

In the midst of the debate about artificial intelligence and the dangers it poses, Guillermo del Toro said at a public talk that he personally was not afraid of it. “I’m not afraid of artificial intelligence, I’m afraid of natural stupidity,” said the 58-year-old. However, he did not elaborate on this statement.

What he said: “All intelligence in this world is artificial. When I look at the people who are entering the art scene and how they love the arts despite all the difficult times, it makes my heart sing,” he continued.

Guillermo del Toro goes for “next generation”

The filmmaker also put his hopes in the “next generation”. “I remain enthusiastic and skeptical at the same time,” said the The Shape of Water director. “We do great things, many people are great.”

He’s mostly inspired by “fearless” people, not those who see everything as gloomy all the time. He is certain that there is no substitute for human creativity.

Guillermo del Toro’s most recent work is the stop-motion film Pinocchio. The German cinema release was in December 2022. As the director of this work, he knows exactly how important human craftsmanship is for art.
