Guerreiro wants to extend, BVB apparently hesitates – Rothe and Aning are lurking

Among senior professionals

Raphaël Guerreiro has been under contract with Borussia Dortmund since June 2016 and, together with Marco Reus (33) and Felix Passlack (24), forms the trio of the longest-serving professionals in the Black and Yellow team. In view of their expiring working papers, it is highly doubtful whether the three will continue to do so in the 2023/24 season – even with Guerreiro, who was actually seeded, it is reported that it is still completely unclear how things will continue.

According to information from “Ruhr News” the left-back would very much like to stay in Dortmund, especially since his family feels very comfortable in the city. The interest at BVB is currently only met with limited approval. Those responsible for the Bundesliga club are hesitant to extend the contract because Guerreiro has not yet collected sufficient arguments for a new contract. In addition to his susceptibility to muscle injuries, it is the Portuguese’s inconsistent performances that are giving Borussia bosses food for thought, according to the report.

Guerreiro is the only experienced left-back in the Dortmund squad, Nico Schulz’ time at BVB is considered to have expired. In perspective, 17-year-old Tom Rothe and 18-year-old Prince Aning could take on his role – but both youngsters do not yet have the tools for high demands. Aning should first gain experience in the 3rd division, while Rothe occasionally receives assignments with the pros, but is still reaching his limits.

“It’s important that the boys keep their rhythm and have minutes of play. Both are on the right track and we are very happy to have both,” said coach Edin Terzic, who would have no problem bringing the two youngsters to Guerreiro should the worst come to the worst. “Tom and Prince would both be backups to throw in without hesitation.”
