Ex-Herthaner
With Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (28; Al-Hilal), the heart of Lazio left Rome this summer, the Italian runner-up wants to use his qualities in a group of new midfielders. Daichi Kamada (27; free transfer from Frankfurt) and Nicolò Rovella (21; loan with obligation to buy from Juve) have already been presented. Now Mattéo Guendouzi is there too.
Lazio confirmed a loan deal from Olympique Marseille on Thursday evening, which could result in a purchase obligation. Most recently, media reports assumed an immediate, fixed transfer. The Biancocelelsti should therefore pay 13 million euros for the 24-year-old ex-Herthaner. This transfer fee should be able to increase by EUR 5 million through bonuses. The deal is now likely to amount to the same amount, only with a delay. There is talk of a rental fee of over one million euros with a subsequent purchase option or obligation of over 12 million euros.
From Kovacevic to Crespo: Lazio’s record arrivals
According to reports, Guendouzi had planned to stay in Marseille for two years since moving from Arsenal FC in 2021 – first on loan, then with a contract until 2025 for 11 million euros. Since then he has scored ten goals and 19 assists in 103 competitive games. Olympique Marseille, on the other hand, identified Guendouzi as a candidate in January in order to generate a high transfer fee. The hoped-for 30 million euros, although Aston Villa showed interest, but never even remotely offered a club. In mid-August, the southern French lost to Panathinaikos in qualifying for the Champions League, which is why the pressure on income should have increased. In an upheaval – like almost every summer – Marseille has left ten players (some previously on loan) for €31m, while €69.5m has flowed into nine professionals (some for mandatory purchases).
