Guardiola still has plenty to complain about after 5-0

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was obviously very pleased with Sporting Portugal’s convincing win in the eighth finals of the Champions League, but he still had plenty to complain about after the 5-0 in Lisbon. “I’m very happy, don’t get me wrong, but we can do better,” said Guardiola. “In football we have one clear rule: if you have the ball, don’t lose it. But we often gave the ball away just like that.”

According to Guardiola, some players from his squad in Lisbon underperformed. That was not the case for Bernardo Silva. The Portuguese scored two goals against his compatriots from Sporting. “His qualities as a footballer are indisputable. But I always say to him: you have to score more often. He now scored a fantastic goal,” said Guardiola on Bernardo Silva’s 0-2, a beautiful volley with the outside of the left foot.

Guardiola: “The players know me. They know that I always see things that could be done better. In the opening phase of the match we saw how good Sporting is. Believe me, the difference between these teams is not 5-0.”

Bernardo Silva said he experienced a “special evening” in the city in which he played for Benfica for years. “I am Portuguese and come from the other part of Lisbon. It was special to score twice in the city where I come from. It always gives extra motivation to play against Sporting,” said the 27-year-old Portuguese.
