Groups in crisis: what should be the value of the ticket if there were no subsidy

Luciano Fusaro, vice president of the Argentine Association of Automotive Transport Entrepreneurs, announced the real cost of the bus ticket at the end of February: it would be 336 pesos. In his estimates, within the AMBA, the calculation imputes 184 pesos from subsidy, 28 pesos would correspond to the average ticket paid, and the rest, 123 pesos, would be lost.

From this point of view, according to Fusaro, if the Government has to lower subsidies and passengers start to pay more per ticket in an inflationary context and low wages, it can cause a social crisis in the metropolitan region. However, this more expensive ticket scheme is in force in several provinces of the country.

For May the minimum ticket (between 0 and 3 kilometers) will cost 42.67 pesos, the section from 3 to 6 km will be worth 47.55 pesos; and from 6 to 12 kilometers you will pay $51.20 pesos.

The public transport of Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA) will increase again after the Government defined that the rates will be updated every month based on the variations of the Index of Consumer Prices (CPI) which measures inflation. This new system began to run on March 1 and, at that time, the minimum bus ticket was reduced to $37.10.

The monthly adjustment of public transport fares in the AMBA was defined last year through the Resolution 1017/2022 published by the Ministry of Transport in the Official Gazette. In April, the increase was applied again.

In addition to the groups, the rates of the trains that circulate in the AMBA will also be modified. For its part, the subway network of the City of Buenos Aires has its own increase scheme until September 2023.
