OostrozebekeA group of friends and regulars of café ‘t Pleintje managed to surround a suspect in a stabbing at an apartment in the center of Oostrozebeke on Sunday evening. Moments earlier, he had stabbed a resident of the apartment in the shoulder with a knife.
At around 5.45 pm an MUG team, ambulance and police stopped at an apartment on the Gemeenteplein in Oostrozebeke. “A friend of ours who lived on the first floor had been stabbed in the shoulder,” says the group of friends who watched everything on the terrace of café ‘t Pleintje. “He came out with his hand on his shoulder. His t-shirt was all bloodied. Maybe he got into a fight with someone.” The victim was given first aid and taken to hospital.
The police of the Midow zone made the first determinations, but there was no trace of the perpetrator. “After the police left, the man who had been seen with the victim last weekend and also on Sunday walked by again, feeling dead,” the friends continue. “The cafe owner recognized him. We did not hesitate and followed him. We closed off all entrances and exits to and from Gemeenteplein and managed to corner and surround him. He first started to flee, but gave in quickly when he saw that we were 6 to 7 people. He slumped to the ground and admitted that he had indeed stabbed. We held him down until the police came to arrest him. We are proud that in this way we were able to help with an arrest and in this way also do our friend a service. We were doing our civic duty but never thought something like this would happen to us.”
Police handcuffed the suspect and took him in for questioning. The prosecutor’s office will decide what will happen to him next. The victim was not in life-threatening condition. It is not clear at this time what led to the altercation.
