The Groningen hockey players suffered their fourth season defeat in Rotterdam on Sunday afternoon. Victoria was too strong for coach Julian Steen’s team 3-1.
Even before half time, Victoria opened up the decisive gap. After eight minutes, Rotterdam’s first chance was a direct hit. Six minutes into the second quarter, Victoria doubled the score from a penalty corner. Shortly before half time, Victoria made it 3-0 from a penalty shot.
After the break, Groningen did everything they could to get back into the match, but it was limited to a sharp penalty corner from Liz Klompmaker.
“It wasn’t good today,” said Steen. “Although I must say that I really liked Victoria. They applied good pressure, were always on top of things and were simply more assertive than us. We were too vulnerable ourselves and that was punished severely. Together with MOP, Victoria is the best opponent we have had. They deserve the compliments, although we also have to look critically at ourselves.”
Despite the defeat, Yvet Mooiweer had an unforgettable afternoon. The reserve goalkeeper made her debut, because the first goalkeeper had to miss due to illness.
