Groen clarifies change of course: “Free meals for vulnerable children, cheaper by train through Europe” | Inland

It’s just as easy to go to a psychologist as to a doctor, cheaper train travel through Europe and free meals for vulnerable children at school. These are some of the substantive emphasis that Groen places during Refresh, a summer weekend at which the party kicks off the new political year and the change of course.

“Climate and environment remain the greatest challenges of our time and they form the basis of all our work. At the same time, Green is more than green: the fight for a better climate is inextricably linked with the fight for more well-being and more equality. We will emphasize that even more strongly from today,” co-chairs Nadia Naji and Jeremie Vaneeckhout said at a press conference. The party’s new impetus is accompanied by an internal reorganization and a colorful refresh of the Groen logo.

“More than 6,000 young people on waiting list”

For Groen, everyone is entitled to carefree care, both the care provider and the recipient. “At the end of 2020, more than 6,000 children and young people were on a waiting list for help. The reality behind those numbers is dramatic. Affordable, high-quality and accessible healthcare are a basic right,” said Vaneeckhout. “Carefree care also means that people can spend their old age in their familiar neighborhood or that you can live, grow up and play in a green environment.”

In the field of energy, Naji appealed to the other political parties: “The government must intervene more strongly on prices and invoices. It’s not the time to play political games, that doesn’t help the bills. We have to work together across all levels.” Groen also wants to further accelerate the transition to 100 percent renewable energy.

The greens believe that the ecological choice should also be the cheapest or easiest choice in other areas. Vaneeckhout gave some examples: “Travel in Europe should be cheapest and most comfortable by train. With a deposit on cans and plastic bottles we prevent litter and we can recycle better.”

“We will continue the fight against inequality unabated and it is a third important pillar in our political work,” concluded Naji. She argues for free meals for vulnerable children and asked that the Flemish government work on practical tests.
