Alina Grijseels (Borussia Dortmund) and Johannes Golla (SG Flensburg-Handewitt) have been awarded the German Handball Award. The two captains of the German national teams received the most votes in the public vote initiated by “Handball-World” and “Bock auf Handball” and went down in history as the premiere winners of the award, which was presented for the first time.
“It’s an honor for me that the fans have chosen me for this award – of course I’m really happy about that,” said Flensburg pivot Golla.
Almost 200,000 votes were cast in January for the 14 categories in which players, coaches and other handball personalities stood for election. A public favorite based on fan suggestions was also chosen. Here the choice fell on Johannes Bitter (HSV Hamburg) and Emily Bölk (Ferencvaros Budapest/Hungary).
Team of the year 2021 is SC Magdeburg, coach of the year Magdeburg coach Bennet Wiegert. The majority of fans voted for DHB high-flyer Julian Köster as the newcomer of the year. The titles at the school world championships in Leipzig and Berlin (handball moment of the year) as well as the prize for the referees Lars Geipel/Marcus Helbig (lifetime work) were selected by the editors.
“We are extremely satisfied with our first German Handball Awards and are very happy about the broad response in the handball scene,” said Andre Tzschaschel, Managing Director of Handball-World and co-editor of Bock auf Handball: “The fact that the awards at their premiere Finding such an appeal right away is a nice confirmation. This shows, as hoped, that the awards can be a building block to put handball in the limelight on another level.”
