After his announced departure from SpVgg Greuther Fürth, coach Stefan Leitl admitted talks with Hannover 96, but left his future open from the summer.
“There was an exchange, there was also an exchange with other clubs,” said the 44-year-old before the Bundesliga game at 1. FC Union Berlin on Friday (8:30 p.m. / DAZN).
There is still no commitment to a new club. “So far it hasn’t been decided what I’ll do in the summer,” Leitl admitted at the same time that “anything could happen.”
Leitl had informed the Franconian Bundesliga relegated that he wanted to leave the club in the summer. The decision had matured over the past few weeks. Leitl is considered a hot candidate for second division club Hannover 96. “We will now clarify all the formalities,” said the Fürth managing director Rachid Azzouzi.
Leitl’s contract in Fürth is actually valid until the summer of 2023. According to reports, an exit clause gives him an early departure. “It was important for me that I had to create clarity,” he said. He wants to clear the way for “new energy, for a new coach.”
Leitl took over the game association in February 2019 in the 2nd Bundesliga. Last season he sensationally led the team to their second promotion to the Bundesliga in the club’s history.
