You know this effect from the predecessor, “The Battle At Garden’s Gate”. Disappointment sets in on the first few listens because you seem to know every song and have heard it better on “Anthem Of The Peaceful Army”. Of course it’s all back: Josh Kiszka’s boyish, intricate vocal coloraturas soaring to the highest pitches, twin Jake’s ripped-off Jimmy Page riffs, which only appear to be played sloppily from the hip, third brother Sam’s melodic bass lines and Danny Wagner’s solid groove. Just not the immediate catchiness of the debut.

But if you give the album time, you can listen to “Starcatcher” again and discover a few beauties with “Fate Of The Faithful” or the first single, “Meeting The Master”. Even if the guitars sound a nuance rougher and a few snippets of conversation from the studio linger, it hasn’t turned out to be the announced garage album. Maybe that would be a way to avoid the eternal comparisons with the first.
