Thanks to the movie Barbiereleased a few months ago and immediately became a cult throughout the world, Greta Gerwig became the female director to have directed the highest grossing film ever in the history of cinema. This was also the highest-grossing film worldwide in 2023.
The choice to entrust the director born in Sacramento, California, with the role of president of the jury of the Cannes Film Festival is already history. Indeed: this is the first time that an American director has obtained this recognition.
And it is also the second female director ever to occupy this role. Before her, there had only been the New Zealand director Jane Campion in 2014.

The news of his presence at the next Cannes Film Festival as president of the competition jury was given by the film festival itself. On the official site, in fact, we read. «Heroine of our modern times, Greta Gerwig shakes up the status quo between a highly codified film industry and an era that demands greater expansiveness».

Gerwig always dreamed of becoming a playwright. Starting as actressThen, she has worked on many projects as a screenwriter.
