The former top sprinter Andre Greipel is the new team manager of the professional road team in the German Cyclists’ Association (BDR). The BDR announced this on Friday.
The 40-year-old succeeds Jens Zemke, who was unable to continue in office due to lack of time.
“It’s completely new for me, a big challenge,” said Greipel, who won eleven stages of the Tour de France in his career and finished third at the 2011 Road World Championships in Copenhagen: “The current generation is strong. With Forming a team with them, pursuing a common goal and successfully implementing it will be an exciting task.”
In addition to looking after the team at World and European Championships, Greipel’s responsibilities also include team formation in close coordination with Vice President Marcus Burghardt and Sports Director Patrick Moster. “That was the best solution we could find,” said Burghardt: “Not only does Andre bring in incredible experience, he is also not tied to any team and can therefore act freely and neutrally.”
The three-time German road cycling champion Greipel ended his active career in 2021.
