Dropped the SC change in 2017
Five years after his short-notice switch to SC Freiburg, Michael Gregoritsch now feels ready for the Baden Bundesliga team at the second attempt. “It was better to come here now as a mature man, not as a little boy,” said the 28-year-old (quoted via “dpa”), who arrived at the Breisgauer training camp in Schruns, Austria, on Friday.
When he left Freiburg in 2017 after talks with the SC manager and coach Christian Streich, he was actually sure that he would introduce himself to FC Augsburg “just out of politeness” as agreed. Then he switched from Hamburger SV to FCA – out of a “gut feeling”, as the striker explained. Freiburg seemed to him to be “perhaps too big a step”, he felt overwhelmed, primarily for private rather than sporting reasons. “It was raining in Freiburg, but the sun was shining in Augsburg,” said Gregoritsch. “Then I checked Google Maps again: Eight hours from Freiburg home, four hours from Augsburg. That also played a role.”

When Streich called Gregoritsch again, it was a heartfelt wish for the Austrian national player to clear up the story from back then. They did that in a long conversation, said the newcomer. In any case, he was “convinced that I can still develop further under Christian Streich at the age of 28. There isn’t a player who hasn’t gotten better under him. I am very curious and look forward to working together.”
Gregoritsch also made his debut for SC Freiburg in the 4-3 (2-2) win in the friendly against FC St. Gallen, alongside Ritsu Doan, who had also just arrived. Japanese Doan even put himself on the top scorers list when he defeated the Swiss first division team on Saturday. Gregoritsch remained unsuccessful in his half-hour mission.
