If you like bittersweet indie rock or early emo from the 80s and 90s and don’t know Palila yet, you’re welcome to catch up: The band may not be from Seattle, Athens, Kansas City or California, but from Hamburg, but they don’t make one Conceal the fact that he was socialized with Pavement, Dinosaur Jr., Built To Spill, Guided By Voices and Co., but also with Neil Young. Their record ROCK’N’ROLL SADNESS, which was released in November 2021, testifies to this. The now released new non-album track “Speak To The Devil” reinforces this impression.
Palila was founded in April 2019 by guitarist and singer Matthias Schwettmann and bassist Christoph Kirchner. Sascha Krüger has been with them on drums since January 2021. Her first EP “Are We Happy Now?” was released in 2019, her follow-up “Tomorrow I’ll come visit you and return your records” a year later.
About “Speak To The Devil”, their first of further new songs, Palila say:
“Since we really wanted to release our album on vinyl, we already knew during the recording that we had to put some songs aside. After we had finished producing the 15 songs, we discussed for a long time which ones we should part with for the album – because to be honest we ourselves think that each of the 15 songs would have been strong enough to end up on the record. ‘Speak to the Devil’ was sorted out in the end because we wanted to have the greatest possible variety and dynamics on the album and there were other mid-tempo pieces that we definitely didn’t want to do without. Ultimately, we are happy to be able to introduce interested listeners to three more songs, which from our point of view are far more than typical outtakes.”
