Greenhouse gas emissions in the second quarter 9 percent lower than a year ago

Greenhouse gas emissions in the Netherlands fell by 9 percent in the second quarter of this year compared to the same period last year. Report that Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) and RIVM Wednesday based on preliminary quarterly figures.

The lower emissions are mainly due to a decrease in natural gas consumption. Less natural gas was consumed in industry, agriculture and by households and companies, mainly due to the high gas prices and the sunny spring. As a result, CO₂ emissions in industry, mineral extraction and construction fell by no less than 19 percent.

In the second quarter of this year, the Dutch economy emitted 6.4 percent less CO₂ than a year ago, while gross domestic product grew by 5.3 percent in the same period. The transport sector, on the other hand, has emitted 22 percent more CO₂ than a year ago. This increase, according to Statistics Netherlands, is mainly due to the partial recovery of aviation after the peak of the corona crisis.

It has been agreed in the Climate Agreement that greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced by 49 percent by 2030 compared to 1990. In December 2021, that target was adjusted to at least a 55 percent reduction.
