Now that the Hoorn city council has given the green light for ‘one of the largest developments in Hoorn’, the construction of Poort van Hoorn can finally begin. The redevelopment of the station area, including 500 homes, will take 8 to 10 years and will cost millions of euros.
The prestigious construction project should become the calling card of the municipality of Hoorn. “About 500 homes will be built at this prime location, we are going to add facilities and we are going to improve the station area as a junction for train, bus, cyclists, pedestrians and cars,” said councilor Axel Boomgaars. He speaks of a ‘historic decision’.
And that means that the station area will undergo a major overhaul in the coming years. For example, the supermarket will be moved to another location, and parking garages and bicycle sheds will be added, creating space for homes, offices, catering and retail. “We are also going to make the Museum Steam Tram more visible and put it in the spotlight,” says Boomgaars.
The north side also gets an urban appearance, where it is buzzing with life both during the day and in the evening. “The bus station will be moved from the south side to the north side, so that there is room for greenery, but also to bring back the experience of the canals (a kind of canal, ed.). The feeling that you are in the city center starts immediately on the south side of the station.”
Financial support
The redevelopment of the station area requires a significant investment of 200 to 300 million euros and is funded by the municipality and partners such as the NS, ProRail and the province. The construction of the station area will take about 8 to 10 years and will take place in phases. The construction project starts on the north side.
