Green light for more cycle paths in Berlin

After another check, the Berlin traffic administration gave the green light for another five cycle paths.

As the house of Senator Manja Schreiner (CDU) announced on Monday, Hansastraße (Pankow), Grellstraße (Pankow), Köpenicker Landstraße-Baumschulenweg-Bulgarische Straße northern part (Treptow-Köpenick), Hermannstraße (Neukölln) and the Crossing Hellersdorfer Straße connection Ernst-Bloch-Straße (Marzahn-Hellersdorf) a bike path. In some cases, there are minor changes to the plans, such as the traffic lights.

The Roedernallee (Reinickendorf) and Blankenfelder Chaussee (Pankow) projects, on the other hand, will not be implemented for the time being, as it was also said. New plans are needed here.

Berlin’s new transport senator Manja Schreiner (CDU) announced a few weeks ago that plans for certain cycle paths, some of which are already under construction, and the usefulness of certain projects will be put to the test, not least with regard to the elimination of car parking spaces.

The announcement had caused a lot of criticism and controversial debates about the transport policy of the new black-red Senate.

The test results for a second tranche of cycle paths are now available, after the results of a first round of tests were published at the beginning of July. Taken together, both tranches can now be completed for eleven cycle paths along main roads, seven will not be built for the time being.

“And that’s not the end of the tests, more bike paths will follow soon,” explained Schreiner. “Our experts take an equal look at all road users. Pedestrians, cyclists, public transport and private transport.” The top priority is and will remain road safety – it has the highest priority when assessing roads. “Vision Zero, i.e. avoiding road deaths, is the central mission.”

► The almost finished bike path in the Ollenhauerstrasse in Reinickendorf According to earlier information from the traffic administration, it was not subject to Schreiner’s moratorium, but was subjected to another review by the district office in the light of this. On Monday, the district and traffic administration officially announced that it would be “opened soon”.

Since it was built on the previous parking lane for cars, they should be allowed to park in one of the two lanes in the evening and at night. The compromise had already become known last week.
