The company Bio Energy Coevorden (BEC) will almost double the production of green gas. At the moment, 26 million cubic meters of gas per year is still produced via bio-fermentation, but that will increase to 50 million cubic meters. According to BEC, this amount is equivalent to the annual consumption of a city with a hundred thousand inhabitants.
The increase is possible by using residual products from the food and meat industry from now on. When it was founded, manure was still one of the most important production sources. The bio-digestion installation – which ultimately converts the residual material into green gas – is therefore being expanded. This is expected to be completed next year. Some 25 million euros will be invested to make this possible.
The green gas is supplied to the residents of Coevorden and Dalen, among others, via the regional network of RENDO. Residents of the De Heege district, next to the Europark where BEC is located, have been informed about the planned expansion. In the past, bio-fermentation led to a number of complaints from local residents, mainly about odor nuisance.
Due to the growth of the company, the number of jobs at BEC increases from 25 to 40 employees.
