The concert was postponed twice, and on Wednesday the park stage in Wuhlheide finally saw green. Green Day opened the open air season!

The rock band from California (85 million records sold, five Grammys) is one of the headliners at the Rock am Ring festival this weekend. They celebrated the start of their Hella Mega Tour in Europe in the capital.

17,000 fans made the pilgrimage to Köpenick, hot for live music after a two-year Corona break.

The musicians from the Bay Area drove up before the concert even started. Support act were the alternative rockers from Weezer. Two headliners in one evening! Most famous catchy tunes: “Island in the Sun” and “Buddy Holly”. Musical greeting from singer Rivers Cuomo (51) home: “Enter Sandman” from the Metallica colleagues.

At 20.24 Green Day opened the show with “American Idiot”. This was followed by “Holiday” (political message on the LED wall: “F*** Ted Cruz!”) and “Know your Enemy”. Songs every fan can sing along to in their sleep at night.

Singer Billie Joe Armstrong (51) has the audition and post-singing like Freddie Mercury once did – and the Berliners love it.

An evening reminiscent of youth cellar parties of the noughties. Enthusiastic fans from toddlers to canes. Anarchy on stage, pogo in front.

Billie Joe Armstrong clearly had fun. The Berliners eh. A successful start to the long-awaited open-air season.
