Greeks continue to puff and face a new heat wave, the rest of Southern Europe is also suffering from heat: what about us? | Abroad

In large parts of Greece, the mercury has dropped below 40 degrees again today, after extreme temperatures were measured in recent days. But there is no question of real cooling for the time being. For example, in the capital Athens it is still about 36 degrees. Meteorologists also warn of a new heat wave. Italy is also groaning under the heat, while more pleasant weather is predicted for our region.

“From Wednesday, the temperature in Greece will rise again,” it sounds. In Athens it would be more precisely up to 44 degrees. A record temperature of 44.2 degrees was already measured on the island of Crete on Saturday. Due to the extreme drought and the wind, the risk of forest fires is extremely high, the emergency services report.

Today, many archaeological sites are closed between 11:30 AM and 5:30 PM, for the third day in a row. The Acropolis in Athens has been closed to tourists for the past few days due to the unbearable heat on the mountain. Earlier this week it was still very busy at the monument. Visitors had to queue for hours in the blazing sun.

The rest of Southern Europe is also suffering from the heat. Record temperatures are expected in Italy on Tuesday. Code red was declared for sixteen cities as a result of the heat wave, including Bologna, Florence and Rome. In the shade it would be around 36 degrees, but the wind chill is approaching 40 degrees. On the island of Sardinia, the mercury may rise above 48.8 degrees on Tuesday, the highest temperature ever recorded in Europe, on August 11, 2021.
