Greek coast guard: at least 15 dead after two migrant boats sink in heavy weather Abroad

The Greek coast guard has not yet released any information about missing persons off the coast of Kythira. It is also not clear exactly how many people are still missing in Lesvos. The Coast Guard does report that three people are trapped in an inhospitable area.

Adverse weather conditions are complicating both rescue operations, Coast Guard spokesmen say. According to local media, Kythira is currently being ravaged by stormy winds and strong gusts. Because of this wind, the boat on the east side of the island would have run into problems. According to unconfirmed reports, a number of migrants are on the rocks.

Several ships and a Navy helicopter are involved in the rescue operation at Kythira. It is not clear where the migrant boats come from. The island of Kythira is located between mainland Greece and Crete. Lesvos is located just off the coast of Turkey. The army is involved in the rescue operation there, the coastguard reports.
