Greece pays off IMF debt two years ahead of schedule | Abroad

Greece has repaid the last tranche of its debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) two years ahead of schedule. This is evident from a tweet from the Greek Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Mitsotakis welcomed Greece’s repayment of the latest €1.9 billion tranche to the IMF. He labeled it “the end of an era” for Greece. The severe financial crisis that the country went through in 2010 was a dark chapter in the country’s history, he said, and one that “the Greeks should not be allowed to go through again”.

The IMF loaned Greece nearly €32 billion as part of its bailout after the country’s financial crisis.

The yield on ten-year Greek government paper is currently about 2.5 percent, whereas at its peak in 2012 it was more than 35 percent for a while.
