The jumps were bad, he said himself, and there was also a portion of luck involved. But the broad smile on Menno Vloon’s face said it all tonight. With a height of 5.85 meters he won the pole vault at the European Championships for national teams in Poland.
The Zaankanter seemed to die a little earlier at 5.75 meters, but survived that height with a fortune. When the bar went to 5.80 meters, Vloon skipped his turn to be the only one to conquer the 5.85 meters.
Jessica Schilder from Volendam finished fourth in the shot put with a distance of 18.27 meters.
Partly thanks to the victory of Vloon and that of Femke Bol in the 400 meters for women, the Dutch team is in fourth place in the country classification. Games are also scheduled for tomorrow and Sunday. The bottom three of the sixteen participating countries are relegated from the top division.
