Lothar Buchmann died at the age of 87. The former football coach achieved promotion to the Bundesliga with Darmstadt 98 and OFC, and won the DFB Cup with Eintracht.

He was one of the most successful football coaches in Hesse: Lothar Buchmann. He died on Tuesday night at the age of 87. His former club Darmstadt 98 announced this on Wednesday afternoon.

After his career as a player, Buchmann was particularly successful as a coach. He took over the position on the sidelines at the Lilies in 1976 and led the club into the Bundesliga less than two years later – it was the first time in the club’s history.

DFB Cup victory with Eintracht

During his career, Buchmann worked as a coach at many Hessian clubs, including Eintracht Frankfurt. With the Adlerträger he won the DFB Cup in 1981 with a 3-1 win in the final against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. It was Frankfurt’s third DFB Cup victory to date.

Two years later – in 1983 – he managed to get promoted to the Bundesliga again. This time with another traditional club from Hesse: Kickers Offenbach.

Active for young talent after his coaching career

After his career as a coach, Buchmann lived in Reichelsheim (Odenwald) and ran a private soccer school for young talent there. Order and discipline were always particularly important to him – both with the top clubs in Hesse and with the young players.
