In the early stages, Tom Beugelsdijk of the home team came down in an unfortunate way after a duel with Isac Lidberg of the Eagles. The defender appeared to have lost consciousness immediately. Sparta and Go Ahead players stood around the 31-year-old Hagenaar and gestured for medical assistance to come onto the field quickly. One of the players also seemed to remove Beugelsdijk’s tongue from his throat.
ESPN subsequently decided not to repeat the nasty fall of the experienced defender on television. Beugelsdijk received care on the field for minutes, both from the staff of Sparta and that of Go Ahead, and was then removed by stretcher. Bart Vriends was his replacement.
Moments later, the game resumed. TV Rijnmond reports that under the circumstances, things would go well for Beugelsdijk.
