Graves of unknown Brabant dead opened for police and NFI investigation

A special team of the police and the NFI (Dutch Forensic Institute) opened graves of two dead in Huijbergen and Zundert on Monday, whose identity has always remained unknown. The identification requires DNA material to identify the unknown with current techniques. In one case, actual remains were found that are being further investigated by the NFI.

The cemetery on the Molenstraat in Zundert was about someone who was found between 1975 (missing) and 1985 on the Waaijenberg, in the outskirts of Zundert. There was no question of a crime at the time, police said.

The one who died has never been identified and was buried in an unnamed grave. The search in Zundert for possible DNA material has come to nothing.

Excavation in Huijbergen
Earlier in the day, a grave was also opened at the cemetery in the Dorpsstraat in Huijbergen. The NFI did find human remains there, which are further investigated by the NFI.

The Burial Act has been amended and the police must try to identify unknown dead. This is done on the basis of the DNA material. This is compared with DNA material in the DNA database for Missing Persons (DVP).
